Start of the Vienna-Rostock intermodal shuttle
Yesterday the intermodal shuttle service between Vienna and Rostock started operating for the first time to create a direct link between Central Europe and Scandinavia/Finland/the Baltic States. It will mainly carry cranable trailers but containers and non-cranable trailers can also be transported on the train.
The offer is a so-called "open train" and it is directed towards all forwarders and transport companies wishing to use this fast and eco-friendly connection. The train is operated by “European Rail Shuttle” and “Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo”. Cooperation with the company “CargoBeamer” has made it possible to carry the non-cranable trailers on this route.
The new service will start with two turnarounds per week, which is planned to be doubled after six months. The aim is to have one departure per working day, i.e. six times per week.
The port of Vienna acts as a hub for Southern and South-Eastern Europe, while the port of Rostock offers more than 120 departures per week in ferry and ro-ro transport to Denmark, Sweden and Finland.
The two ports have initiated the project but as the providers of infrastructure they do not themselves offer transport services. It is therefore all the more gratifying to the two managing directors of the ports, Dr. Ulrich Bauermeister for Rostock and Mag. Friedrich Lehr MBA for Vienna, that their initiative now leads to a new offer for both ports. "The project takes account of the necessity to offer a competitive alternative to road transport on this important axis along the shortest route through the Czech Republic".
Currently there are 32 trains weekly at the terminal for intermodal traffic to Verona (11), Novara (3), Brno (4), Wels (2) as well as Hamburg (6) and Karlsruhe (6).
