Ferry cargo

The ferry terminal has an area of over 200,000 m² with five landing stages, two of which are equipped to handle railroad cars. With these facilities, Rostock has everything it needs to continue developing its solid position as a ferry hub for the Baltic Sea.

Once again the ferry and ro-ro traffic has shown itself to be the driver of growth in Rostock's port business. expected growth.

Handling of wheeled cargo, i.e. ferry and ro-ro goods again increased strongly. All told the amount went up by 1.3 million tonnes to 16 million tonnes (+9 percent on the previous year). The share of wheeled cargo in the total handling of Rostock seaport thus amounted to 60 percent last year.


The number of truck units carried on the ferry and ro-ro connections to and from northern Europe increased from 326,051 in the year 2015 to 354,175 last year. So did the number of trailers handled, from 116,649 in the year 2015 to 122,352 last year. The number of railway wagons carried to and from Trelleborg decreased slightly from 21,672 to 20,358.

The number of ferry passengers carried on the lines to Denmark, Sweden and Finland increased by 100,000 to 2.3 million travellers.This makes Rostock the largest German ferry passenger port with several scheduled connections to northern Europe.


In the next few years the port have to focus attention on extending the infrastructure in order to create the conditions for the further expected growth.



Roll-on/Roll-off Cargo

With its four ro-ro berths located adjacent to the ferry terminal and the terminal for intermodal traffic, the port of Rostock has excellent conditions for accommodating ro-ro traffic in regular service or tramp shipping.

Cargo handling at the roro-terminal is dominated by handling of paper from Finland.

In 2016, 823,000 tonnes of paper passed the edge of the quay at berths 60, 62, 63 and 31 of Rostock overseas port. This was an increase by 207,000 tonnes over the previous year. Especially the concentration of UPM's paper business in the southern Baltic at the port of Rostock since the start of 2015 and the quality provided by all protagonists involved in the handling led to a leap in volume. The lion's share of the paper handling is provided by UPM. Never before was that much paper handled in Rostock.

The shipping company Swedish Orient Line (SOL) which had been operating a ro-ro service between Rostock and Hanko in Finland with four to five departures per week since September 2012 closed down its service at the end of 2016. The Rostock-Finland corridor has grown very strongly in recent years despite the market trend. Both Finland carriers operating in Rostock have contributed to this. ROSTOCK PORT is all the more sorry about the withdrawal of SOL.

Nevertheless ROSTOCK PORT convinced that goods transport along this corridor will continue to grow due to the advantages of traffic geography and the infrastructure connections of Rostock. This is already borne out by the increases in capacity and frequency announced by Finnlines.

Combined Cargo

The efficient handling terminal for rail, road and seaborne cargo was upgraded until March 2014 on an area of around 30,000 square metres. The whole intermodal terminal covers approx. 70,000 square metres.

Five tracks will be served by two new gantry cranes able to drive curves. So the port of Rostock is prepared for further increases in the amounts of wheeled cargo.

For the first time just over two million tonnes of goods were moved at the Intermodal Transport Terminal in 2016. The number of trailer units handled increased from 69,824 in 2015 to 76,012 in 2016 and thus by nine percent. The Intermodal Transport network was continuously consolidated and extended. Currently there are 36 intermodal trains operating weekly to and from Verona (13), Hamburg (5), Karlsruhe (5), Brno (4), Novara (3), Duisburg (5) and Wels (1).

The port aims for a further extension of the services and frequencies.

Bulk Cargo

The port has an open storage capacity of 420,000 m² as well as a covered storage capacity of 55,000 m² available for bulk goods.

In addition to the handling of coal, building materials, fertiliser and grain are among the most important bulk cargo handled in the Port of Rostock.

Dry bulk handling achieved a total of 7.4 million tonnes last year and thus an increase of six percent above the level of the previous year. Almost all types of dry bulk showed a positive trend, especially oilseeds, fertilizer and coal.

Coal / Construction Materials

A daily volume of up to 20,000 tonnes of coal can be discharged at berths 23 and 24. Overhead cranes are used at berth 22 for the unloading of limestone, gravel chippings and sea gravel. The handling of such materials is centred around the coal terminal with a capacity of 240,000 tonnes of hard coal. Conveyor belts supply the neighbouring 500 MW hard coal fired power plant as well as additional recipients.

At berth 21, a crane with an hourly output of up to 700 tonnes as well as a preparation plant for see gravel is available.


The fertiliser quay is equipped with a loading facility (hourly output of 1,000 tonnes), railway car unloading station, conveyor belt system and storage depot with a capacity of 55,000 tonnes. The main commodity here is calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) which is produced the nearby fertiliser plant.


Silos with a capacity of 496,000 tonnes as well as facilities for loading and unloading ships, trucks and railway cars ensure skilled handling and fast throughput of goods. A ship loading facility with an hourly output of up to 1,000 tonnes is available for grain export. Vessels are discharged via an unloading facility with a capacity of up to 350 tonnes per hour. A system of conveyor belts ensures the efficient moving of grain from the silos to the ships.

One of the most modern malt houses in Europe is located adjacent to the grain harbour. It has its own silo with a capacity of 10,000 tonnes and is connected with the silo facility at the port thus ensuring the rapid intake of brewer?s barley as well as an equally rapid output of goods.

With a capacity of 1,600 tonnes of processed canola seed per day the largest oil mill in Germany put into operation in August 2006. The investment cost totalled nearly 14 million Euros. The oil mill comprises the extraction facility, seed storage, seed processing plant, product storage and service department.

Grain handling, which managed a slight increase despite poor harvest yields last year, does however remain the main dry bulk cargo at the overseas port with around 3.5 million tonnes. In order to support the development of Rostock into a grain hub and, in the long run, use the opportunities provided by the deepening of the navigational channel especially for grain export, company Euroports is building another efficient grain loader at the overseas port until 2018. Furthermore, other grain customers are also extending their storage capacities.

General Cargo

Three sheds each with a length of 360 m and possessing track and road connections are available for handling and storage. Cranes with a load capacity of up to 100 tonnes guarantee a rapid throughput of general cargo, windmill-powered plants and other project cargo.

Pier II is the heart of general cargo handling. In total, the Rostock seaport has 600,000 m² open storage as well as 120,000 m² covered storage available for general cargo goods.

Compared to 2015 (956,000 tonnes) 750,000 tonnes were handled in 2016, specially sheet metal, slabs, pipes and wind power plants and paper.

The decline stated in 2016 in the handling of general cargo is exclusively due to a change in classification of paper as cargo (now in ferry and ro-ro goods). Leaving the paper handling out of consideration the general cargo handling even increased slightly. There were, for example, increases in the handling of sheet metal and slabs.



Liquid Cargo

The oil harbour possesses a tank store with a capacity of 700,000 cubic meters available for the storage and throughput of mineral oils such as heating oil, diesel and motor fuel. Crude oil, liquid fertiliser and other liquids are handled here as well.

The berths at the oil harbour can accommodate 6 tankers with up to 100,000 tonnes and has a handling capacity of up to 6,000 tonnes per hour. The handling of liquids occurs by means of tank car, pipelines (Schwedt, Böhlen) and by tank truck.

A neutral service company, Großtanklager Ölhafen Rostock GmbH, is the operator of the oil harbour and provides services for all mineral oil companies using the Port of Rostock.

The oil harbour is also the location of a biodiesel plant with an annual capacity of 150,000 tonnes of biodiesel and 18,000 tonnes of glycerine.

At 2.7 million tonnes the handling of liquid goods in 2016 recorded an increase by 300,000 tonnes or twelve percent compared to 2015. More petrol, ethanol, naphtha, gas oil and fuel oil were pumped over the edge of the quay in Rostock last year.
