Key Facts and Figures

In 2008, the Rostock seaport achieved its best cargo handling result in its history.

27.2 million tons of cargo were handled in 2008, topping 2007’s results by 700,000 tons.

Ferry and roll-on/roll-off cargo

The ferry and ro-ro traffic accounts for a significant portion of cargo handling in the port of Rostock. This area has exhibited enormous growth in the recent years.

In 2008 a decline was recorded in ferry cargo, down 10% or 1.4 million tons to only 13.7 million tons at the year’s end.

In contrast, Ro-Ro cargo increased by one million tons to 2.3 million tons. These results are attributable to the new Ro-Ro connection between Rostock and Hanko, Finland.

So rolling cargo – ferry and Ro-Ro cargo – accounted for 59 percent of the total cargo volume at the Seaport last year. A total of 16 million tonnes of rolling cargo were moved through the seaport in 2008.

Continual growth in combined cargo handling

Combined cargo handling is a significant growth factor for the Rostock seaport.

At the terminal for intermodal traffic, a total of 69,053 cargo units with a total tonnage of 1.46 million tons were moved in 2008. This represents an increase of 14 percent over 2007’s figures.

Handling of bulk goods increases

With a total of 10.6 million tons of bulk goods handled in the last year, Rostock remains the largest bulk goods port on the German Baltic Sea coast.
