Hanseatic City of Rostock
The city of Rostock dates back nearly 800 years as a Hanseatic and harbour city. With its 200,000 inhabitants, it is the largest city in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and is also the academic, cultural and economic centre of the state.
Since the beginning of the 15th century, Rostocks city centre has been characterised by its university, with which the likes of Albert Einstein, Max Planck and Heinrich Schliemann can be associated. With eight faculties, the University of Rostock is among the German universities with the widest range of programmes offered. Approximately 13,000 students are currently enrolled. There are an additional 450 students at the Academy of Music and Theatre, stimulating the cultural life of the city.
