Finnlines increases capacity on all routes

Finnlines is upgrading its services as more capacity than ever will be available on all routes, Baltic – North Sea – Bay of Biscay.

On the route Rostock–Hanko a second ro-ro vessel of the Breeze-class will be deployed, starting in August 2022. The vessels can carry 4,192 lane metres of cargo, each, which means a growth of about 1,000 lane meters compared to the vessel currently on the route. With four departures a week in each direction, Finnlines will offer a tailor-made service for the intermodal business in Rostock. The company expects more than 400 departures in 2022.

Capacity to and from Travemünde will also grow. “There will be more space for general cargo on the route between Germany, Western Finland and Helsinki. Cars can be loaded on hoistable decks and trailers below,” says Torkel Saarnio, Line Manager for Rostock Direct Services at Finnlines Plc. He adds that a larger vessel will soon start to operate in the Finland-Poland service.

“With shortage of drivers and high road diesel costs the intermodal business is growing and the extra capacity is needed, especially during weekends. The new fleet plan will not only meet the market needs, but it will also reinforce our position as a green shipping operator, since the CO2 emissions per unit will decrease significantly. Not only trailer volumes are increasing – the growth of steel, paper and car shipments forecast a bright future. Sustainable values and increasing costs are boosting the business for an even better success,” continues Torkel Saarnio.

Finnlines adds new hybrid Eco vessels to its fleet

Finnlines will boost its maritime connections with the deployment of three Eco class hybrid ro-ro vessels. Finneco I has already started to operate on the Bilbao–Zeebrugge/Antwerp–Travemünde–Helsinki/Kotka–Paldiski route. Finneco II is expected to enter the same service during calendar week 28 and Finneco III week 29.

The three Eco class vessels have a transport capacity of 5,800 lane meters, each, equivalent to around 400 trailers, a capacity increase of nearly 40% compared with the current largest ships on the Baltic–North Sea–Biscay route. To reduce emissions, the vessels are equipped with many advanced technologies, such as air lubrication, a high-powered battery bank and solar panels.

The new hybrid vessels will bring many benefits to customers, including fast and efficient loading and unloading and they can carry any type of cargo, high and heavy, long and wide. A hoistable deck makes it possible to load units, which are up to 7 meters high.
