Finnlines continues to strengthen maritime connections between Germany and Finland, supporting European industry, supply chain resilience and security of supply through its extensive route network and significant fleet investments.
Operating from the German ports of Travemünde and Rostock, Finnlines offers regular connections between Germany and Finland, Sweden and Denmark, as well as via transshipment to the UK, Belgium, Spain, Poland and Ireland. The company operates daily services between Travemünde and Helsinki and four weekly departures between Rostock and Hanko, providing reliable sea transport connections for European industry.
Travemünde serves as Finnlines’ main hub for Finland-bound cargo, handling a wide range of freight and ensuring efficient connections between continental Europe and the Nordic countries. Meanwhile, cargo volumes on the Rostock–Hanko route have increased, particularly in paper transport. Demand for trailer, steel and automotive shipments has also remained strong. In addition, military and humanitarian aid transports have increased, while project cargo has become an important addition to the regular cargo mix.
“Rostock serves as a gateway to continental Europe, with excellent rail and road connections that support efficient intermodal transport. We have also expanded our network with new connections from North Sea ports and from Malmö to Poland. These routes further strengthen our connections to Germany by providing our customers with greater flexibility and more routing options for their business operations,” says Torkel Saarnio, Head of Truck and Trailer Segment, Finnlines.
Strong growth potential in intermodal transport
The Baltic Sea region has developed into an important hub for intermodal transportation, with Finnlines’ German ports playing a key role in connecting maritime, rail and road networks across Europe.
Finnlines sees significant growth opportunities in intermodal transport.
“We see strong growth potential in intermodal transport as customers seek increasingly sustainable and cost-efficient logistics solutions. By continuing to invest in infrastructure and developing our network, we can provide efficient sea transport services that meet the evolving needs of European industry,” says Saarnio.
New vessels for the Germany–Finland route
At the same time, Finnlines is investing in the future of the Germany–Finland route through its new Hansa Superstar vessels. The first of the three new ro-pax vessels is scheduled to enter service in 2028, increasing cargo capacity on the route by approximately 25 per cent compared with the vessels currently in operation.
The additional capacity will strengthen supply chains between Finland and continental Europe and ensure the transport of essential goods ranging from forest industry products and machinery to food and medicines.
The vessels will be approximately 240 metres long and offer 5,100 lane metres of cargo capacity. Passenger capacity will be 1,000 passengers. The methanol-powered ro-pax vessels will further strengthen Finnlines’ ability to provide low-emission freight and passenger services in the years ahead.
Finnlines specialises in freight transport, and its extensive route network provides regular and reliable sea connections between Finland and continental Europe. Through continuous investments and a comprehensive network, the company supports European trade, industrial competitiveness and the safe and efficient movement of essential goods.
